The Update on Associate Attrition (Calendar Year 2022) report covers overall associate attrition and hiring with detailed analyses of departure destinations (other firms/in-house, or other), factors driving associates' departures, and whether the departures were wanted or not from firms' perspectives, as well as comparisons of data by entry-level and lateral status, race, gender identity, geographic region, firm size, (including new statistics and analysis specific to firms of 501-1,000 attorneys and more than 1,000 attorneys), "boomerangs" and rehires, and other key metrics.  New this year:


  • Associate hiring by quarter;
  • Lack of, or lack of clarity about, advancement opportunities as reasons for departures; and
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), legal recruiting, and professional development roles as next destinations.
